"It looks as if we could be meeting Richard Castle's dad next year. Exec producer Andrew Marlowe is considering an "explosively personal" February-sweeps two-parter of ABC's Castle that would introduce the patriarch in a way that would profoundly impact both his son's and granddaughter Alexis' lives.

What kind of man might he be? "I'm pretty sure he's ruggedly handsome," says Marlowe with a laugh, adding that Nathan Fillion's fantasy choice to play him is Harrison Ford!

Any word on who will play Castle‘s dad? –Alana Not yet, and for good reason: Contrary to one published report, this season’s February two-parter might not necessarily tackle that tale. “It’s certainly something that we’re thinking about seriously and trying to find the right angle in on,” show boss Andrew Marlowe explained to me. But as of a few days ago, it’s “not definitely” going to happen by sweeps. Instead, he says the Castle team is mulling an alternate storyline that promises the annual allotment of “big tension,” “personal stakes” and ” fun twists and turns.”

Other than saying there were some “big, surprising” things in store, Seamus Dever was pretty mum when we caught up with him at the People’s Choice Awards. But he did reveal a nugget that will make fans of the dapper detective very happy. “I think later on in the season we’re going to find out some more about Ryan’s past,” he says. “So there’s an episode that’s going to be dedicated to that.”

Do you have an Esplanie scoop for us Castle fans? –Marine Jon Huertas has plenty to say about Kelly Hu’s imminent drop-by,which I’m saving for Monday. For now, I’ll relay his belief that it’s Lanie “who needs to put up or shut up” in that off-and-on relationship. “She’s the one who pushed Esposito away, when the whole marriage conversation came up, and she’s the one who’s all about the booty call and keeping it not so serious,” he noted. “So it’s her that needs to put up or shut up.” And if she did? “Esposito would probably say, ‘I’m down with that.’” Looking beyond Hu’s Monday visit, Huervas shared this: “There’s some stuff coming up with Lanie, that we’ll see in a different episode.”

Mentions of the 100th episode and a BIGFOOT (LOL!) plot for later in S5:

"Marlowe: We're currently working on the 100th episode, but we have some big storytelling before then. Traditionally we have a two-parter this time of year. Castle's daughter ends up being kidnapped and put into a very difficult situation. We play a lot of it from Castle's point of view, trying to get her back. It's a tremendous performance by Nathan.

After the two-parter, we're doing a little nod to the horror genre, centered around a haunted videotape. Castle sees it and is convinced he's going to be dead in 48 hours. It's a ride; it's a lot of fun.

We find out Ryan has a past going undercover in narcotics, and he ends up having to go undercover again. It turns out he's a very different person undercover.

Later on this season, we have a murder where it looks like the only credible suspect is Bigfoot, which sends us on a Bigfoot hunt. We like to lean into the genre and end up with a real world explanation.

For the 100th we wanted the quintessential 'Castle' show -- something that was fun, something with great Castle-Beckett stuff in it. We're really excited with the direction it's going in."

Ausiello: Probably when she succeeds in breaking down those steel-fortified walls of his. “The issue [ex-wife Meredith raised] is going to cause some trouble,” series creator Andrew Marlowe acknowledges. “We spent four years exposing who Kate is. She’s a very private person, and she’s kind of opened [up] to Castle. But now the question is, where’s Castle’s depth? He tends to live on the surface, but we know there’s more to him than that. So part of what we’re going to do is dig a little deeper.” As such, Castle‘s boss says the final batch of episodes will shed additional light on Rick’s backstory. “It was really gratifying in the [recent] two-parter to be able to expose some of his history,” notes Marlowe, “some of the things that came to him when he was a kid and some of the things that made him who he is. We’ll see more of those kinds of moments as we move forward.”
