Kate Beckett’s New Job in Castle!



"It has been revealed that Kate Beckett will be the captain of the 12th precinct when Castle returns for season eight.


At the end of season seven, Beckett (Stana Katic) aced her captain’s exam and was asked to run for state senate – but fans didn’t find out what her new role would be.

Well, the wait to find out is over as executive producer Terence Winter spills the details on Beckett’s promotion.

“What’s exciting about that dynamic is that she’s not going to be a traditional captain who is in the office,” Terence explains

“She’s boots on the ground. She’s still Beckett. She’s going to be handling cases and she’s going to be involved in the interrogation.”

Beckett’s new job won’t be the only change in season eight, with Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) working with an independent investigator named Hayley Shipton..."

Although stars Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic were not in attendance, their costar Tamala Jones filled us in on how Castle will change in the upcoming season. "It's a very different type of a Castle season. It's amazing, it's more fun, more mysterious." She also went on to add that "Castle is revamping and remodeling his private investigation office with secret passageways and gadgets."

Where We Left Off: We learned what drove Castle to become a mystery writer when he was driven to solve a case with eerie similarities to an event from his childhood. After acing her captain's exam, Beckett was approached to possibly run for a New York Senate seat.

What's Next: Say hello to Capt. Beckett! Although new co-showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter considered having Beckett take on a higher office, they didn't want to so drastically alter the DNA of the show. "At the end of the day, what we were trying to do was shake up relationships," Hawley says. Adds Winter: "She's not going to be a captain like Montgomery or Gates. She's still going to be very boots-on-the-ground, but now she has to work with Esposito and Ryan much differently than in the past, and that's going to cause more conflict. And it's much different when your wife is the captain, the boss, versus when your wife is the detective." The show will also add two new faces -- security specialist Hayley Shipton (Toks Olagundoye) and tech analyst Vikram Singh (Sunkrish Bala) -- while also reintroducing Jack Coleman's William Bracken in the two-part season-opener. But the fundamentals of the show won't change. "It's always been about the Castle-Beckett love story," Hawley says.

Ausiello: “Only a few months” will have passed since the events of the Season 7 finale, co-showrunner Alexi Hawley says. But oh, how much has changed! (And that’s not even to mention the new little one Ryan and Jenny have on the way.)

Co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter told me that although Martha has moved out of the loft and has a newly thriving career when Season 8 opens, “She’s very much a part of Castle’s life. Don’t think that just because she now has her own place and is doing well on Broadway that we’re not going to see her sharing her wisdom with her favorite and only son.”

Neighbors alum Toks Olagundoye makes her debut as free-spirited and quick-witted independent investigator Hayley Shipton in the Castle season premiere — and EW has the exclusive first look.

“[Toks] plays a really dynamic, fun character,” executive producer Alexi Hawley tells EW. “It’s a voice that the show doesn’t have. What’s great about her is Castle [Nathan Fillion] has been investigating cases police-adjacent, so it’s always about doing things the way police would. She doesn’t do things that way, so that fun dynamic of, ‘No, we break in rather than get a warrant,’ is kind of fun.”

Ausiello: As part of the Season 8 plan to present twentysomething Alexis as “a young woman as opposed to a child,” Rick’s daughter will find an influential new mentor, in Scotland Yard alum-turned-security specialist Hayley Shipton (played by new series regular Toks Olagundoye). “Hayley is going to help Alexis find herself,” says co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter, who sees the two sharing “a different kind of energy” than when Alexis interned for M.E. Lanie. “What we’ve shot with [Alexis and Hayley] together is magic, it really is.”

Co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter foresees “a very interesting story” ahead for the boys, in the wake of their colleague’s job change. “After seeing Beckett ascend the ranks, they’re realizing maybe it’s time for them to start looking upwards in their own careers,” Winter says. “In doing so, they start to butt heads a bit, but in a fun way, because the dynamic between those two has always been ‘two brothers.'”

CASTLE: New Showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter Tease Season 8

CASTLE is undergoing a good number of changes when the show returns on September 21st. On-screen, THE NEIGHBORS’ Toks Olagundoye has joined the ABC drama as Hayley, a security specialist; meanwhile, Penny Johnson Jerald (Gates) is off the show, and Beckett is the new captain. Off-screen, there are some changes at play, too. Season 7 showrunner David Amann has left, as have CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe and executive producer Terri Edda Miller. Long-time CASTLE writer Terence Paul Winter is now running the series with former CASTLE writer (and recent THE FOLLOWING co-showrunner) Alexi Hawley.
