Ausiello: You can expect… Rick not to be hanging out in Kate and Vikram’s secret lair at the vacated strip club. Because although he is now in the loop on the LokSat sitch, “The idea is that he’s not actively involved,” says co-showrunner Alexi Hawley. “He is in the know and [Beckett] isn’t keeping anything from him, but there is nothing actionable yet for her to get him involved” — the operative word being “yet.” As co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter notes, “That of course will change as we go on in the season.”

As Kate and Rick pretend to stay broken up (for LokSat's sake) while secretly together, "There's a lot of 'lost time to make up for,' so to speak, in the bedroom. So there is some friskiness," teases co-showrunner Alexi Hawley. When not canoodling, they'll tackle a case in the word of competitive a cappella (cue Susan Sullivan and Jon Huertas showing off their pipes!), enter the courtroom (a first for the series), visit the police academy where Kate trained and get some Red Heat action, butting heads with a diplomatic security agent from Russia. Also: When Rick, Alexis and Hayley chase a case to L.A., Gerald McRaney and Summer Glau guest-star, as you know. But what you may not know is that in that episode, the mystery of Rick's missing time will be solved Once. And. For. All. Says showrunner Terence Paul Winter: "Here's a promise: We are going to conclude that. It will be done."

Coming Up on Castle: Caskett's Back Together, and a Mini Firefly Reunion Is Happening


The future of Castle remains a bit murky.

While the show was on hiatus, ABC boss Paul Lee shared that the network hoped to continue the series next year...even if one (or both) leads opted not to return. (For their part, Castle exec producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter told TV Insider that they hope the show would continue in its current form.)

Despite the many off-screen variables, the show is back, and the second half of the season will look decidedly different than the first batch in Season 8—Beckett (Stana Katic) and Castle's (Nathan Fillion) short-lived breakup is behind them, now that he knows she only left in an attempt to protect him. To keep Castle safe, though, the duo opts to keep their reunion a secret...leading to some super awkward moments at work, as they try to convince their colleagues that they are very much split up.

Though Episode 15, titled “Fidelis Ad Mortem,” largely revolves around sending Beckett back to the police academy at which she trained, “There also is fallout from the [preceding] L.A. episode, with regards to Castle’s discovery about his missing time,” says co-showrunner Alexi Hawley. BONUS SCOOP: In a springtime episode, a series regular character will emerge as a person of interest in a murder, ultimately setting the stage for a possibly significant life change.

The show will “touch on it again a couple of times driving toward what’s going to be the finale,” says EP Alexi Hawley, who promises both a reveal and some frustration in the season-ender — especially if the show doesn’t get renewed. “Our hope is to get to a place where they do get to confront LokSat and get something satisfying,” he adds. “It would be great to have something of a cliffhanger.”
